Midnight Thoughts On WCUltimate
I'm currently sitting in a lounge in my dorm building so I thought I'd say a few words about a few insights that I've had about the West Chester team. It occurred to me at practice tonight (although I suppose it's technically last night) that, once again, there have been less and less people at practice each week. This occurs every year up until the point when we start collecting money for dues and then the people we're left with are the people who really want to practice hard and play their best. We take this to be a good thing because we know for sure that the people who show up are the people who want to work hard and get better, but is it really better for the future of the club? Is it better to have a large team of people, with only a handful of them putting forth effort? Or is it better to have a small group of hardcore players? A larger team does come with its perks. More recognition from the university is one good thing, with more money and better practice times/fields coming from it. It would also be nice to have the consistent numbers for an A and a B team, as well as a women's team (WCUltimate is currently mixed, although I think a women's team is currently in the works). And certainly a split with A/B teams would help solve some of the issues of some people wanting to be lazy and some people being willing to put forth effort, since the hardcore players would be placed on A team and the lazy people would be stuck on B team. I would love to see WCUltimate grow to the point that it can sustain at least a men's and a women's team. Still, I enjoy playing on a small team. It's nice to be able to know every single person in the club (although it's been a slow process trying to learn the names of the freshman). I think in the future the club will be much bigger and more diverse, but for now I think I'll enjoy the small, close-knit feel of a team that's in the stages of development, even if we have to put up with late practices on a field that doesn't drain when it rains. Besides, it's better for layout practice, right? Until next time, keep playing Ultimate!
